Christians know God by many names, LORD, Heavenly Father, and Creator being among them. When you begin to study the Bible, you see that there are so many more. According to Hebrew tradition, the Names of God speak of His character...WHO He is, not just a name or label. Here are several of those names:
Elohim - God of Creation; Supreme One Jehovah Rapha - The Lord your Healer
Adonai - Lord of Lords Jehovah Nissi - The Lord is my Banner
El Shaddai - God Almighty Jehovah Jireh - The Lord, your Provider
El Elyon - The Most High God Jehovah Tsidkenu - Lord our Righteousness
El Olam - The Everlasting God Jehovah Sabboath - The Lord of Hosts
Yahweh - The Self-Existent God. I AM Jehovah Maccaddeshcem - The Lord your Sanctifier
El Roi - The God Who Sees Me
At Agape Center Lynchburg, we point clients to God at any opportunity that is presented. We can use these names to share with them about different aspects of God's character: that He created them (Elohim), that He knows what they are going through (El Roi), and that He will provide for their needs (Jehovah Jireh). Are you going through something difficult right now? Look up the names of God from scripture and grab on to the one that speaks to you most right now. Meditate on what it means and the promise that it is to us, to you. Cling to that and pray for God to show you His presence in this situation and in your life as a whole.
